Keera’s story has come to an end and it’s an ending she deserves more than life itself. For the first time, she is able to breath and be herself. She can figure out who Keera is.
Her taking a year to herself. To figure out herself was the most real and mature thing she could have done.

It took me some time to get back into the story after not re-reading the third book, but I still love the storyline and the characters.
Gerarda had a beautiful story arch. She became more than a sword. Gwenyth became dark, but was able to get revenge on the man who tortured her for years under his fathers and his reign. Riven came to terms with the loss of his powers and was able to embrace what he and Keera could be
after their year a part, he could mourn his powers, his arm, and grow on his own no longer as Killian and Riven, but just as Riven.

Despite the beautiful archs these characters went through, the magic systems were overpowered and had no limitation. Additionally, those who
became the new Amber Fae learned their new found magic without issue. There was no struggle and no realistic difficulty in learning how to use their magic.
Keera is now an overpowered magic wielder who addresses her limits in the book (notes shifting takes a lot of energy) but we never see her reach the top of her burnout. She continues shifting throughout battles, but appears unphased.

The conclusion to this series was just as heartbreaking as I suspected it would be. I sit here in disbelief that it’s over, and positively mystified that something so beautiful could be crafted by the human mind.

Thank you, Melissa Blair, for sharing your grief with us. Even further, thank you for sharing the beauty that is found in mourning, the pain that can come with surviving, and the melancholy that defines rebuilding. I hope your younger self can feel the ripples of the impact your words have made through time, on myself and all of your readers. I look forward to reading more.

a satisfying conclusion to a solid series. some parts felt a bit clunky or too rushed compared to the rest of the series, but an overall worthy read.

i hate that this series gets classified as YA (it's 100% not), or as a romantasy. yes, it's a fantasy with romance -- but the story is not central to that. it is about settler colonialism, indigenous identity, culture, history, land-back, and generational trauma. it is about finding a reason to live and fight for your people and peace for the next generation. it has found-family, and is authentic about grief, suicide ideation, substance abuse and relapse.

highly recommend the audiobook. Kyla Garcia brings Keera and this story to life.
