This is a book for people who love books. Because books are Doors into magical lands; Ways to escape your own existence.
And what a joy to escape to such a colourful, delightful cast of characters. I liked the way this story revealed its secrets. The narratice slowly unfolds itself as both the main character and the reader begin to understand everything.
In the end, I was left feeling incredibly hopeful. Because Doors will always exist.

A rich and beautifully written story with great characters! I loved, loved, loved this book and can’t wait to read more of her stories.

I'm so sad to be giving this book kind of a bad review. I was so looking forward to it and it just didn't hit for me.
First I will say I think the magic system and the lore were both very interesting. I was rooting for our FMC and some of the side characters. I wanted them to be safe and happy.
Unfortunately all of this is overshadowed by the fact that the first 13% of the book is straight up child abuse. Then there's forced false institutionalization and personally I thought the ending simply didn't make up for the fight or flight I was in for most of the book. Should I have been better about checking the triggers for this book for sure and if those things aren't as big triggers for you then I think you'll end up enjoying the book way more than I did.
But I almost dnfed it and while I am glad I didn't, I can't say I super recommend this book.

What a fantastic ending to a magical story. January is a brat, then an innocent girl, then afraid but brave, then confident. And January LaVoy brought her to life beautifully.
