The first 200 pages were a chore to get through- the writing was odd, the story was miserable. After page 200 it was decent but predictable. The main character, to me, didn’t become likable until the last few chapters. I rarely dislike a book, but this one was bad for half and then just meh for half. Doors are also not an original concept. If you want a much better version of this book, checkout The Starless Sea.

Maybe I'll come back to this, but I'm looking for something less grounded right now.

This book is beautiful inside and out and Harrow’s prose is sublime. This doesn’t feel like a debut.
I loved January: a courageous and feisty heroine and I do love a good coming of age story. Also I was born in January myself so this story carried extra significance.

Overall this book is 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for me for the following reasons: the pacing of this story seriously slows in the middle and I struggled at times to keep engaged.
Overall this plot has been used before especially in The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman (which is part of my all-time favourite trilogy) and I couldn’t get away from the fact the themes of this book felt, whilst beautifully written, felt repeated from another much-loved book.

That said I will definitely recommend this book and I can’t wait to see what Harrow writes next
