This book is beautiful inside and out and Harrow’s prose is sublime. This doesn’t feel like a debut.
I loved January: a courageous and feisty heroine and I do love a good coming of age story. Also I was born in January myself so this story carried extra significance.
Overall this book is 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for me for the following reasons: the pacing of this story seriously slows in the middle and I struggled at times to keep engaged.
Overall this plot has been used before especially in The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman (which is part of my all-time favourite trilogy) and I couldn’t get away from the fact the themes of this book felt, whilst beautifully written, felt repeated from another much-loved book.
That said I will definitely recommend this book and I can’t wait to see what Harrow writes next

Boring. It sounded like such a cool book, but the story never came together & it was a bit too whiny/sappy for me.

3.5 This was a really pretty book. I enjoyed the concept of the magical doors and the adventure. The ending was quite lovely. It’s a very light hearted read for the adult fantasy lover. I personally did not connect with the style of writing and found certain parts of it drawn out and challenging to finish as it tended to lose my attention. However, if you enjoy the authors style of writing, it has the potential to be a magical read for some.
DNF at about 35%. This book is so slow and not at all what I expected. The narrator is excellent but so far I’ve just spent four hours listening to January whine, and I feel nothing for any of the characters.
I expected some kind of magic and for the doors to be part of the story. They really aren’t. They are just kind of there. Sort of. 30% in I could see exactly where this was going… and I just don’t care. :/
