This.
This is a real story. This is the real thing. This.
This is a real story. This is the real thing. This.
On the surface, this story is about a girl who can open doors into other worlds. But underneath, it is about negligent parents. The father thinks it's okay to hand over his kid to a virtual stranger while he goes to other worlds to look for the wife he misplaced. The person he chooses to care for the girl treats her like a collectible at first and a threat later. He, in turn, hires a nanny who abuses the girl.
The mother is someone who has roving in her blood. When she was with her family, she longed to go traveling. She did that, met a guy, fell in love, had a kid, and then found it wasn't enough. So, she took her family on a journey and misplaced them. Now, she searches for them. Why did they have to have a child?
The protagonist that I'm supposed to be rooting for. She is selfish because she is okay with self-mutilation when she gains something by using her power. Yet she won't help the one person who is looking out for and return her to the world that person desperately needs to go back to. Add in the fact that the person is an African American woman forced to play a maid in colonial America. She basically has NO rights in this world. Later on, the protag simply ditches that person and a boy who risks his life for and leaves his family her for whatever reason.
The protag is also very stupid. Even after realizing that the people after her won't shy away from murder, she follows a character unarmed. It also takes her a long time to realize who is behind the whole thing.
Finally, we don't get an explanation as to why certain people can open doors and others can't.
All the stars! What a beautiful love letter to stories.

This was such a delightful surprise! I adored Julian and Ade's love story, and the concept of the doors was fascinating. Surprising twists, wonderful characters, and we should all hope to have a dog like Bad.
