I really enjoyed this book! I was captivated throughout the story but I think that is because I love anything to do with history. I fully understand why some people may feel uncomfortable by some of the things that happen in this book. After all it is set when racism in society was still prevalent and accepted. However, I do not think that the author was disrespectful in this and it closely represented what society was like. I did enjoy the fantasy elements. I do love anything to do with portals to other worlds and enjoy learning about the differences between worlds. I would recommend this and look forward to reading more of Harrow’s books!

No exactamente.

Such a lovely book. I saw reviews that called it a love letter to books, which is true both in the plot and the writing style. Alix crafted something gorgeous here, where the adventures speak to every bookish girl and every sentence is beautiful.
From the description this seemed like the type of well reviewed book that would bore me to tears- flowery prose, early 20th century historical fiction setting, fairy tale "love at first sight" relationships, etc.
But intricate "book within a book" parallel narrative was extremely well done came together like a finely crafted puzzle box.

nothing worked in this book. the writing had soooo much potential. it was lyrical and flowery but unfortunately it was like random words strung together
nothing made sense and i have no idea what happened

I feel the premise of this book was more intriguing than how it actually turned out. The writing style was complicated for me to connect with and so I switched to an audio version halfway through and enjoyed it much more. The main character, although had growth, just came off across as too whiney. I think I'd much rather prefer to hear more tales of her father than her plot line.
