Starts slow and then starts to sprawl too quickly with the three different POVs imho. The parents were so interesting but it made the main storyline feel meh by comparison.

really cool concept and nice ending, was compelling enough for me to finish it but i couldn’t get into the story or characters enough to really get invested in it. i liked the chapters of the book she reads in the story more than the chapters of her actual story
Born a mixed child in the late 1800s, the book begins in 1901, introducing us to the main character, January, and taking us through the major events that occur in this young girl’s life. Raised as the adoptive child to a powerful, rich, white man, comfort is all January knows until she discovers a book about magical doors. Believing these doors to exist and with the power of the written word, January embarks on an adventure and search for the Ten Thousand Doors.
I liked the overall story and the way each piece of it came together. This is a story about a girl discovering her origins while also spreading her wings. However, it was slightly boring. A large chuck of the book is slow with only some bits in the middle truly being engaging. It’s a cute story though and I enjoyed the overall message - 3 stars.

4.5/5!
Seriously. I was not feeling it at all in the beginning. At least the first 40% of the book was a slog for me. But then when it picked up, it REALLY picked up. From that point I was dialed in and there for all of it. And right to the end too. Looking back, it's not really fair to complain about the beginning though. It was necessary build up for characters and the way it all tied up throughout the mid to the end it all paid off. The premise, the story, the significance and twists. It was a great fantasy adventure that lingers in your head long after you're done.

This book was just lovely. A really great story that was at times challenging. But I really liked it
As most have said, this book has a pretty slow start. With that, I found myself interested throughout the entire thing. I felt the magic flowed smoothly and didn’t take me out of the story and I constantly wanted to know what’s happening next. I love a good magic adventure once in a while!!
3.5 rounded up | I wish this was a bit quicker in the beginning but other than that, solid historical magical realism type book
