Did some research on park yeonmi, and I don't feel like this is a really worth it account of North korea
Wow. This is one of those eye-opening books (and her YouTube channel is too) that causes a complete shift in one's worldview. I have been curious about North Korea for some time and this is the first book I've read on the topic and couldn't put it down. It's sparked the beginning of a rabbit hole for me, I suspect - I want to know more and hear more people's experiences. It's a harrowing, unbelievable experience that Yeonmi Park went through, and she is incredibly brave and inspiring to have shared her story the way she has. I don't want to forget it; I want to feel grateful every day for the food, the safety and the freedom that I have. It is written in a straightforward way, and is quite a short book, so I think it is a good place to begin if you're at all interested in the experiences of North Korean defectors.
This was a terrifying look into the life of a North Korean and what it takes to get out alive of such an oppressive regime. Things like self criticism sessions and reasons why people would be sent to concentration camps and executed was really eye opening. After getting out, Yeonmi also points out the small comfort that was not having to make a lot of choices or think for yourself as she then began to see how freedom equatesd to having choices and therefore, exhausted her at first. I’m happy she was able to be reunited with her sister in South Korea
The author tells her story in a gentle, clinical way. What she’s been through is just astounding.

I feel so bad for the poor little girl. Every time I got to a crazy part, I had to remind myself that these were real events. That poor, poor baby. My book club decided to read this but I definitely wouldn’t have picked it up on my own.
