I’ve read more than a few books about human trafficking. While I wouldn’t say that I’ve heard it all, I didn’t think I’d be shocked. But I didn’t expect to hear of women asking to be sold into slavery or brothels to get away from the horror and hunger of North Korea. Interesting read.

Really good. This was my first North Korean book, so it is just so shocking to me how people are living like that in the modern age. It seemed so Hunger Games/Nazi-ish to me. What can we do to help these people?!! And the human trafficking too, such a nightmare that it's still such a big problem. So sad. Makes me realize that all my problems aren't as big as they seem to be in comparison.

This book was utterly compelling and absorbing. Yeonmi Park is incredibly brave and forthright in telling her story, and the human rights abuses in North Korea are ones that are seldom talked about. I found myself unable to put the book down and read it in sitting.

During the month of November I'm going to be focusing on nonfiction books -- Nonfiction November. I chose this book first because I've read so many good things about it. OK ... So, on to my review.

I can't even imagine!

In Order to Live is the horrifying story of Yeonmi Park's life in and eventual escape from North Korea.

It is a heartbreaking tale of the abuses Yeonmi and her mother were subjected to after they finally made their way to China.

She ultimately made her way to South Korea and freedom. Today, still in her early twenties, she is a human rights activist working diligently to raise awareness of what is happening in North Korea.

After reading her memoir, I was so thankful that I was born in a free country. Indeed, I'm not sure I could survive what Ms. Park lived through.

Truly such a gut-wrenching story of living through terrible events in a country I had little knowledge over. Her tale of helplessness to triumph is awe-inspiring and I am glad that I opened this book.

Such a remarkable and inspiring story. Everything was so outrageous it actually didn’t feel real, and it broke my heart it was. Everyone must read!
