This was intense - and while possibly what you would expect - it was still a worthwhile read.

If I were to rate this book completely objectively I’d say it’s an incredible story about a woman who has endured the unimaginable and through sheer will has survived and thrived to tell her story. Unfortunately we live in the context of all in which came before us and Yeonmi Park is transphobic among other concerning things and also has had her stories questioned by other defectors and academics. I don’t think it’s fair to invalidate the hardships she’s endured and I want to give her grace since trauma can reshape memories. However, it’s hard to read a memoir in which the main theme is starvation while knowing that her own mother has claimed they were never starving. I have conflicting feelings on this book.

This was such a great book at an insight look into the life of a North Korean citizen and the courageous and frightening journey of becoming free.
