Yeonmi’s journey is inspiring. I learned a great deal from the light she sheds on life in a very closed-off corner of the world.

January’s book club pick and it was amazing. A remarkable story about a resilient young woman who escapes North Korea with her mother at the age of 13. Yeonmi confronts the ugly truth of her past in hopes to inspire others who have been through something similar. It is shocking what has gone on—and continues to go on— in North Korea. 100% recommend. *may have a few F-words, but only when the author is quoting someone else

3.75 rounded up to 4 due to the worthwhile effort to read this book. Lots of information, but be warned, each sentence gets progressively more horrific and depressing, and there’s very little reprieve. Yeonmi has done well surviving her experiences with such grace and strength of mind.

This was a great book! Very insightful on growing up in North Korea and the trials of escaping.  Going on my future recommendations list.  Ididn't realize that she was only 21 when she wrote this book! She's gone through so much in her life, it feels like she should be in her 30s as her story unfolds. Only negative is she reads the audiobook herself and talks a bit slow/robotic in order to make sure the pronunciation is correct (my assumption) I could have sped it up,  but didn't.
