5/5stars
Beautiful, horrifying and incredible, I can't believe any human who has read this could give this book anything less than 5 stars because we are literally talking about the story of this young girl's LIFE in this book.
While reading this book, sometimes I had to remind myself that this is a story about a woman only three years older than me - not a historical novel set fifty or a hundred years ago. The things that happened to this girl when she was only thirteen, fourteen, fifteen years old were absolutely horrific, and she, and all the other people who made it out of North Korea, are some of the strongest people I've ever read about.
No, the writing of this book is not amazing or poetic, but the messages and voice that Yeonmi puts into her tale is definitely beautiful, and this is a book everyone should read.

I have no words to tell you how realistic and heartbreaking it is! It's hard to put my thoughts in order...
If you read the book, you will surely be grateful that you were born in a country where you are free, a country where you can express yourself and think for yourself, without being imposed a political regime where you are practically slaves, where you are some puppets played on the fingers of those in power.

Amazing story, but a real bummer she escaped an oppressive regime only to make it to America and get twisted up in Trumpism.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Definitely a lot of hardship in the escape. Would be nice to also read about the sister's story.
I first discovered Yeonmi Park's story in a university human rights class many years ago, before her memoir was published. As I know probably more than the average person (that doesn't live or come from North Korea), about North Korea through studying, pure interest and research over a decade, not a lot of the events in this book surprised me but by no means does that make them any less monstrous. Such a brave family and such a brave young woman. An indispensable, thought provoking memoir that should be read by everyone.
