This book was truly moving. I had seen an interview that the author did a few years ago and was moved to tears. This book was a heart wrenching account of some of the horrors of living under a dictatorship. To hear from the author that she was even more privileged than many of her North Korean counterparts was shocking, considering how much hardship she endured. How brave of her to tell her story, even with the fear of judgement and rebuttal. Park is a strong speaker and a strong writer who survived the unthinkable.
Engaging memoir that I breezed through in less than a day. I appreciate that Yeonmi Park put Vollers as a co-author instead of using her as a ghostwriter. My only qualm about this book is that Park is now somewhat a weird, right-wing figure (ie. was on Joe Rogan’s podcast), and some of her current events, recent quotes, and youtube videos feel off to me.
This book gave such a different perspective on the world, that I just love, as you wouldn’t think this could happen in our time, but it is happening. I won’t say I love it(but I do), as it is an biography of a young woman journal to freedom in our time.
Heart wrenching. I have very little understanding of this part of the world so I found it horrifying yet educational to read of her experience.
