An incredible book about perseverance, family, blind faith, and loyalty. It certainly helps provide perspective of a country most know nothing about, except negative from its government. It is absolutely frightening what this government forces upon its people, and how they do not know any different because they are guided and taught by propaganda. An easy read, but very difficult topics and subjects are discussed.

5⭐️ ok this book is incredible. My first proper non-fiction book and I was not disappointed. I really loved the writing and descriptions of North Korea and the each of her family memebers. The whole time I was reading this the events in the book don’t feel real, I had to constantly remind myself that this was not fiction but someone’s real life. It was eye opening and fascinating.
However, that being said on a further dive into her story there are many controversies. Many people do not believe the events that take place due to opposing facts in interviews and TV programs. To some people the idea this who story can’t be 100% true is enough for them to not like this book, I however disagree since I believe someone’s story out there is completely like this ( or parts at least) it doesn’t matter who tells it as it is still relevant to society today.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster. I was incredibly touched. I cried, I was angry, I was frustrated and happy. This is such an important book for everyone to read.

This is a story I have indeed never heard. I did not know much about the lives of North Koreans: their struggles and the dangers they face if they try to escape. I feel so much more informed about the situation there and the author’s story has inspired me.
I’m happy that her family were able to leave and I hope that her story will help change the situation there for all the other North Koreans who continue to live under harsh conditions.
It is a very brave thing to tell a story so harrowing. Her story will continue to inspire people from North Korea and other places to take the actions necessary to help improve the lives of the people there. I’m sure of it.
