Heartbreaking, important memoir. I've read a few North Korean escape memoirs and this one was well written and incredibly engaging. The book emphasized the human trafficking and hunger aspects of the defectors more than others I've read. Grateful to Yeonmi for sharing these details.

This was a very powerful story that gave a lot of context to a situation that is hard to understand. The ending was especially hard-hitting and made me quite emotional. I do wish the reflections from the end of the book were present throughout, but I would still highly recommend.
I added this to my to-read list six years ago, but I think I kept putting off reading it because I knew it would be heart-breaking. And it was. I cried reading her story and learning about the devastating experiences people like her have in our world. The injustices that she endured as a child are terrible and eye-opening. I could not put this book down and stayed up late reading it- that’s how gripping the entire story was. I look forward to reading more of her story in her second book which was released earlier this year.
