Young adult AND romance, and yet I loved it? What is happening here? There’s only one rational explanation: it’s a book by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Only she can move me out of my normal reading comfort zones so effortlessly.

Fun two-timeline love story. You get a nice juxtaposition between Meche now and Meche then, and you can see how the same traits that make her feel like a strong adolescent protagonist do not age well. Books about music and magic are definitely up my alley, so really enjoyed all of that. I thought it was interesting that Meche never realized or had to deal with her complicity in her grandmother's stroke.

I'd heard a lot of good things about Silvia Moreno Garcia so figured I'd start with her 1st book. I still consider myself new to these kinds of books in general, but I absolutely loved this one. The story was engaging and kept me turning the pages. The characters were deeply flawed and I didnt like the main character as a person, yet I was still very much rooting for them all. I related to the loneliness the 3 main characters experienced in their formative years. The romance was predictable, but not cheesy. I was hoping for them to wind up together. The music references were diverse and appropriate for the story's timeline and characters. The fantasy element was also just enough to make the story clearly a work of fiction, yet not too much to make it cartoonish. Overall it was just a very well balanced book with an engaging story. I'm anxious to read .ore of her books.

This definitely feels a bit like a debut, but I really enjoyed the light witchy magical realism overtones.

A beautiful book with all the letters. A fine remembrance of the time music and friendship was all and everything.

As expected from other reviews: the magic was a light tough, and niftily done. Music (largely of the '80s) as an integral part of the setting = awesome.
Unexpected but very cool: main characters doing things that are really stupid but extremely believable.
Most of the story is told in flashback. The present day scenes felt pretty pale and thin in comparison, but I can live with that.

This book was strange. It felt like every aspect was secondary - the romance, the coming of age aspect, the magic, the music, the family drama, the neighbourhood and school. The sum of all of these secondary/underdeveloped parts was something quite unsatisfying in the end.

While I thought Mercedes and Sebastian were well developed, all of their character growth happened off page which was also super unsatisfying.

The rest of the characters felt pretty hard to know.

Meh

Whew Chill-ay.

A tough read that does itself no favors.

Nothing feels organic, or fluid. Abrupt plot point to abrupt plot point to failing finality.
