i think i've been reading this for several months. and my enjoyment definitely suffered from being stretched out to a half-chapter a shift and i didn't laugh as much as the others and i'm a bit surprised wikipedia calls it his Masterpiece over maurice and room with a view and passage to india (i haven't read the others, well so) (yet) but there are definitely things in here. and he is such a beautiful writer. i also didn't really like either margaret or helen as characters, or henry or mrs wilcox or actually anybody except leonard bast and tibby (and tom. Please?) so that maybe was a problem, but actually when i think about it now i don't know that i've really liked any of the central characters very much, well that's not true i liked maurice and durham and i liked aziz, but lucy and mrs moore are all a bit dull, they're not really the important ones they're more figureheads so that E.M. can warble on about other things (complimentary) and the side characters are much more fun. actually i don't know so maybe that's a lie. they're ok

This was the wonderful sort of book that you can feel changing you as you read it—tugging you along to a new, truer perspective. That’s what shone through every page of this book: truth. Not because the characters spoke like anyone I knew, had relatable problems, or were situated in familiar scenery, but because underneath all of the old and the English was something deeply human. And deeply concerned with humanity. I think E.M. Forster must have achieved real insight to write a book like this, and reading it was like discovering new insight about myself.

The novel beautifully deals with navigating a path between the material world and the intellectual world. "Don’t brood too much,” one character writes to another, “on the superiority of the unseen to the seen. It’s true, but to brood on it is medieval. Our business is not to contrast the two, but to reconcile them.”

This undertaking to reconcile, to connect, makes for a stirring and engrossing novel. I simply loved it.

2.5-3. Honestly the beginning was fun but this became so dull once they started talking about house things like subletting and stuff. So not what I was expecting. Also, the romance(s) were really weird and unbelievable. Idk. Whole thing seemed rushed and random and weird.
Side note: THREE YEARS FOR MANSLAUGHTER?! bye-
