Hermoso y triste.

Wow! Just wow! This novel of family trauma and grief woven within the mythology of the indigenous spirituality is an incredible narrative. Hobson explores the depths of human reactions to grief and trauma in the microcosm of a single family as the celebrate a painful anniversary. The characters are incredibly complex and their actions and reactions to life and each other offer a tapestry of responses to grief. Hobson also explores the lasting impact of trauma on the land itself. It is a wonderfully told story that I look forward to keeping on my shelf and reading again in the future.

I thought this book was a beautifully challenging story. The author did a wonderful job at meshing the trauma of the family with the rich storytelling culture of Native Americans. While I am not well versed in all of the Native American stories referenced in this book if you pay attention to the story and understand context you can very easily comprehend the current story and the parallels to the ancient stories.
