This was probably the fantasy trilogy that was on the most "best trilogy" lists that I hadn't read, so I had high expectations heading in (but also was a little worried it wouldn't live up). Absolutely loved the first book. Very grimdark, but all the characters (while being kinda terrible) are delightful. It makes such a huge difference to have points of attachment in a dark story (looking at you Sam Sykes and shaking my head sadly). Absolutely loved Purna.
Spoiler Was completely devastated when she got killed. Absolute gut punch that wasn't expected at all. And then. AND THEN, for Diggleby to actually have a demon (and wonderful foreshadowing with this from both the Horned Wolf hunt and the giant battle scene, and the rampant drug use with no consequence, I guess) and to sacrifice it, so she can come back as part demon-dog (or something). Yowza.
Wasn't ready for so many feels so quickly. Very excited for the next book.

I haven't enjoyed a book this much in a very long time. I've read some reviews that complain about the way the author takes traditional fantasy tropes and completely subverts them. These reviewers seem to feel that this is someway disrespectful to the genre. They're entitled to that opinion, but I personally feel that this book is brilliant. It reads easily. The characters are dastardly villains you almost hate to love. The dialogue is fun and funny. It's grimdark with a good sense of humor that doesn't completely beat your soul into the ground by killing off all your favorite characters in one fell swoop.I laughed out loud on more than one occasion. For all it's humor and subversion, though, A Crown for Cold Silver is an excellent fantasy book. I think it's probably going to be one of the more important books of the year and I hope to read more books like it in the years to come.
I got the feeling, reading this book that the writer was having a blast and because of that I had a blast too. I almost wish I hadn't heard of this book yet, because now I have to wait for the next one.

Sehr schade!

The first part of the book was good. Different perspective on fantasy trope. But it dragged in the middle and the ending was disappointing, even for the first book of a trilogy. Another fantasy that failed to ignite my interest enough to read the sequel.

This book wasn't bad, but it also just wasn't really my thing. It was well written, with solid characters and arcs, but I just never really could care about the characters. I dunno, not for me.

The only real criticism I have is in regards to the cultural aspects of the world building. I've never been a fan of slapping down real life cultures on different parts of a map and calling it a day. It feels lazy, and unfortunately, this book definitely did that.

An older woman as one of the main POVs, I did like that. Older women can kick ass in fantasy too, and with older I do mean oooolder. Not not 30s, oooolder. A former rebel, villain, general, queen..hey now I am thinking of Xena, if she has stopped while she was on top and faked her death. And married and lived the small village life.

But for all those cool things I did not particularly like Zosia, because, well I just did not. I did not dislike her either

Then there was this princess who went all this land is mine. Well kudos to you, bring them down.
But I never felt like I knew her or cared.

The church just seemed evil for the sake of being a church.
The queen, why was she bad? Maybe I missed that while skimming.

There was some kind of horned wolf guy, never got that or why he was there.

I really tried, I thought of my rules, but this was a NG book, and it was fantasy, and I really wanted it to work for me. But...I felt nothing, I was bored, nothing happened, maybe it tried too much. It was not for me, so I skimmed the rest cos I had no other book anyway where I was.

A rambling tale of violence, with a large cast is characters

The mileu is interesting, as are the main characters themselves. The story is decently written. But I struggled to maintain interest in this rambling tale. As a consequence, it took me a long time to finish. I may pick up the second title if nothing else catches my eye.
