X-Men Gold, Vol. 1: Back to the Basics by Marc Guggenheim

I always love seeing the X-Men in different situations and configurations - it keeps things fresh and exciting!

“And normal’s always been in short supply for this outfit. It’s like gold.”

I enjoyed seeing Kitty’s takeover as leader and her more rough and tumble style of leading. She feels more involved than Xavier did because she’s been part of the group so long and goes out with the team as their leader instead of staying back (which wasn’t a fault of Xavier - just a difference). She has a lot more of a realistic view on the treatment of mutants and is aware that they are fighting an uphill battle every day. Just... more gritty, less idealized in her thinking. I like it!

A side tangent: I’m (honestly) ridiculously biased towards enjoying anything with Nightcrawler in it because I adore that funky little man. Kurt has always been one of my favorites among the X-Men and I love this older version of him we see here.

I also think this new setup also shows a lot of the struggles of fighting so immensely to be recognized and not demonized or hated for who you are, dedicating years to it, and the disheartening view when you look and see that not much progress has actually been made. Or perhaps it’s even backsliding. It’s no secret that the mutants represent a different form of racial prejudice and outright racism. The word “race” is directly on the page.

Focusing on the story of these issues - they were quite gripping! Non-stop and yet we could see the toll it took on them to keep fighting over and over. Some interesting mysteries and good foundation laid for me to want to keep reading. Stunning action scenes that really showcased their abilities and their ability to work as a team in tandem.

I thought this was a great first volume! I look forward to picking up the rest sometime soon.

It was ok, but I was really just looking for a book about the main x-men cast.

2.5, really. I wanted to like this more than I did. The original artist was meh, and then got himself fired for sneaking in imagery of intolerance in the first issue. Silva, the replacement artist is fine here, but nothing astounding. The writing is similarly fine, with a few standout moments and a number of wincing moments.

Generous at 2.5 stars. This first arc started off good but went downhill as quickly as the team did fighting...well that would be a spoiler. Suffice it to say my foray into the X-Men after more than a decade away may be finished nearly before it started.

The worst part of the post-Secret Wars X-books is that the forgettable, unchallenging books, are, by far, the best Marvel had to offer. X-Men Gold is yet another configuration of an X-team designed to deal with crises. It mostly ignores the terrible Extraordinary and Uncanny runs that preceded it, which was a wise decision. But another bigoted politician working with sentinel tech and brainwashing mutants to fight for her? How many times can this story be retold? And the sentinels are mutating? Again? Not only has this been done a dozen times before since the Grant Morrison "New X-Men" run, but we're also seeing a variation of this same premise happening in X-Men Blue at the same time.

Guggenheim has a better handle on character interactions than Bunn, Soule, or Lemire did, but the story just isn't that impressive.

I recommend it for someone who, at gunpoint, is forced to read an X-book from the 2010s.

The new x-men. And it feels like a classic claremont x-men. Partially because of the choice of cast - Ororo, Kurt, Rachel, Peter, Old Man Logan aka the best of the Wolverines and of course Kitty is in charge. And the authors know who Kitty is and what she can do. So it's kind of a re-tread but done well. And Kitty's leadership is fairly believable. Even Gambit comes off well. So not special and unique, but well done.

This was very enjoyable; it had everything I love about X-men: character development, action, political schemes. I don't have much else to say really, it's just a solid, fun read.

I didn't love the artwork for the first few issues, but it wasn't bad. The costumes are't very exciting, and though I love the idea of Kitty with short hair, it looked awful how it was drawn to begin with. Though, I recall Syaf was dismissed for a controversy, but the details are blurry in my memory now, so whatever. At any rate, I was very pleased to see R. B. Silva turn up in issue 6; I always enjoy their style. They fixed Kitty's hair, and I love how Gambit looked.

Does what it says on the tin, and does it well. Takes the X-Men back to basics with a smaller team focus and a strong direction. Excited to read more!
