Skinwalkers by Tony Hillerman

Not a book you should rush through. With the first chapter, there's suspense and in the next chapter suspicion has you turning on your heels. The dialog throughout this story is superbly written. Its natural and so revealing. It provides the reader with a clear picture of the characters and moves the plot steadily along. Unlike some authors' whose descriptions droll on and on, Hillerman used it sparingly and expertly with many little details (a sentence here or there). The mood and rhythm depicted that slower and quieter rural life (& reservation life) of New Mexico.

I would have loved to be inside Hillerman's head when he wrote this story and watched him work out the plot.

This book is definitely, for me, "a must read again".

This was my first Hillerman novel, and I am impressed. I will definitely be checking out the Navajo Detective series from the beginning. Tightly-paced, enjoyable characters, and full of cultural and geographical insights, Skinwalkers pulled me right in and I didn't want to stop turning pages even when it ended.

This was a thriller that kept me biting my nails--well, if I could. Especially like the fact that the book is set in Navajo cultural context and that justice prevails but without the heroes shooting 'em up!

Unfortunately, this wasn't nearly as good as I was expecting. I liked the brief glimpses into Navajo culture, but there wasn't enough character development, and the plot was slow.

An entertaining mystery and a quick read. Could have been improved with more character development or more red herrings as the ending comes rather quickly and can easily be guessed by the reader.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to feel the American Southwest. Hillerman's descriptions are spot on and left me feeling dehydrated and dust covered.
