OK so I really should have checked the horror tag. This book is GORY.

But for someone who struggles with gore, I enjoyed reading this (only skipping one bit involving teeth 🤢). There was so much in this book to keep me going - with a strong, driving plot; and sympathetic, multi-dimensional characters... Especially great to find in a YA book, where these things can sometimes be oversimplified for a younger audience.

The central themes of faith and LGBTQ+ and acceptance are more blunt, but that is made abundantly clear by the cover and blurb, so it's not like you don't know what you're getting into!

Where it lost the one star for me was on logic - I would have liked a bit more detail on the Flood, and at the beginning I very much felt like I'd been thrown in at the deep end. Maybe the chapter epigraphs could have been used a bit more tactically to do some of that worldbuilding? But equally they did a great job at building ~atmosphere~ that I wouldn't have wanted to lose either.

Definitely recommend checking content warnings, but if you're up for it, give this book a go!

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC, even though this was released in 2022 and I don't know why it's offered as an ARC? Anyway,

I barely have any notes, this truly gripped me by my throat like good old times. It doesn't feel very specifically YA, which I really appreciate, but there's definitely themes and moments that are YA.

This is the first book I've read that has a character with neopronouns and it was really nice to have that experience, because they do kinda stick out of the ordinary. But far from this being a defining part of this work.

I loved the worldbuilding - very gory and chaotic. I would love to see more details on history and development of the situation, I feel like it has enough material for a proper series. On the other hand it stands perfectly well by itself, this is just my personal preference.

I was attached to Benji from the first page and it stayed that way for the entire book. It just generally felt like such a personal, enthusiastic piece; I don't think anyone could help getting into it. Can't wait to read more by Andrew!
