Like a weird, delicious piece of candy.

It took a while to get into the story, but I ended up loving the last half or so. My heart is filled with loads of love for Nick and Rachel :'))

A fun, breezy read I picked up for book club. I don't think I've read a novel set in Singapore before, and I really enjoyed the setting and details of the book at first, although at 527 pages this book could have been 100 pages shorter without losing much. It's a little like watching a really funny SNL sketch that goes on for 2 hours. It's hilarious until your eyes start glazing over with the designer name-dropping and descriptions of fabulous interiors (although the food porn is GREAT), and even though some of the scenarios and characters are really funny, it's hard to spend 500 pages with people whose interior lives are about as deep and varied as Adam Sandler's repertoire.

Sound harsh? You should see how these characters treat each other.

This novel is a roller coaster adventure revolving around family, food, relationships, money, food, extravagance, and food. Rachel and Nick are down-to-earth professors visiting Nick's homeland of Singapore. Nice fails to tell Rachel that his family is rich, richer than she can imagine. Enter family drama.

This novel is told in chapters pertaining to the different characters and or places. There are A LOT of characters, with a cast rivaling that of A Game of Thrones (minus all of the deaths). I appreciate that Kwan used words and expressions that reflect Singapore life, and also included explanations in the footnotes (for those of us less familiar with Singapore, but are ready to dive in to learning more).

I couldn't put the book down. I bought the first novel on one leg of my trip, and the second novel when it was time to return. I look forward to reading more about Rachel and Nick's relationship, Nick's crazy family, and Peik Lin (one of my favorite characters).

Silly but such a fun read. Potato chips of a book.
