The Galaxy and the Ground Within confirmed my deep love for this series and for Chambers work in general. It might be my favourite of the four, I think in part because it benefits from everything the other three have built. Even if the stories are independent and overlap only tangentially, the overall universe, the various societies and cultures that Chambers created are incredible in their complexity, intelligence and gentleness; and this last book encapsulate that wonderfully.

I really loved this book. Chambers continues to show the greatest compassion and empathy in her writing, as we get to see people from a variety of backgrounds come together in this book to learn more about each other. We get more information on the Akarak and the Quelin, which I really enjoyed as it helps make them feel more real than their brief, primarily antagonistic appearances in previous books.

When an accident makes it unsafe for three travelers to leave a refuling depot what kind of relationships will they form?

This book felt most like the first Wayfarer to me. Interspecies relationships and slice of life sci-fi. I love that we got to see Pei again and get another piece of her story. I also really like that we got to learn more about the Akaraks as their story really interested me. There are a lot of deep, excellent conversations in this book.

This is an incredible book.

A handful of (non human) travelers find themselves stuck in a pleasant backwater guesthouse with no communication. Their life happens… it is the most human thing possible and it feels more real and genuine than 95% of more regular fiction.

There is not much of a plot… after 5 days or so communication is back up and everyone continues on their way… being better for the connections with the strangers they were forced to interact with.

Of all the books in the wayfarer series this may be the most wholesome (and that is saying a lot).

I am going to eat some cheese now…
