I had to sit in silence for like 20 minutes after finishing this book. Daunis was such an incredible character, and the author deals with very heavy topics like drug addiction, abuse, and assault in a way that’s both searingly honest and deeply human. Angeline Boulley is a FORCE and I can’t wait to read more from her (once I emotionally recover from this book)

4.5 stars! Great modern native story with insights into their community and the violence they still experience. Gripping plot and I cried no less than 3 times. The main characters grief at times felt so real.

Loved the main character. The plot was done really well. I cried so much, especially at the end.

1 star deducted because the writing style wasn't 100% my jam and I think the first 100 or so pages could have been severely edited down, but damn, after that point this book GRIPPED ME. Also, the tenderness and respect that Anishinaabe culture is held with through every part of the story is incredible and palpable. Highly recommend; give it a chance past the first bit!

Top read of 2024! Dark but not gratuitous. Amazing exploration of contemporary Native American culture, community ties. Plotted very well.
