Blending indigenous culture, scientific curiosity,  youthful romance, and suspenseful inquiry, this book has twists and turns that keep a steady pace. Daunis, the protagonist of the story is strongly rooted in her Ojibwe heritage as well as having an expansive understanding of scientific process. Set in 2004, 18-year-old Daunis becomes entangled in the investigation of meth distribution in her home town. She is usually level-headed and tries her best to balance her responsibilities to the investigation with her obligations to her community, while also dealing with the complicated feelings she has for one of the investigators. She has intentions to be a good informant and protect her community, intentions she occasionally finds at odds with each other. Daunis is not perfect; she has her blindspots and biases based of her past experiences and youth, but she is a compelling character who keeps your attention and best wishes for her success throughout.

Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley is a great read. It is richly detailed with Native culture that invites you in to learn more about it and the people who still keep their traditions alive despite all the harm that has been done to their communities. It is insightful, relevant, and has a good mystery plot that blends together pretty well. There are a number of modern issues that affect Native communities that the author addresses, such as substance abuse, the exceptionally high rates of violence towards Native females, tribal laws, per cap money, blood quantum, distrust and weariness of police and Federal agents,  the destruction that the government has caused Native families and their struggle to be made whole and maintain their traditions. I thought these were well balanced with the overall story.

I will say that towards the middle, I felt like it was a little slow and somewhat bogged down by Daunis' slightly repetitive internal monologue, but once it moved past that, I couldn't put it down. Daunis felt like a well built character with flaws, strengths, struggles, and triumphs. I think everyone should read this book.

1 star deducted because the writing style wasn't 100% my jam and I think the first 100 or so pages could have been severely edited down, but damn, after that point this book GRIPPED ME. Also, the tenderness and respect that Anishinaabe culture is held with through every part of the story is incredible and palpable. Highly recommend; give it a chance past the first bit!

I absolutely loved this until the last 10% or so. I wanted to see more of the case wrapping up.
