I really enjoyed this book, and I think I would actually put it between a 4.25 and 4.5, like a 4.4. It did get a little bit long for me in parts, and I also either missed or there wasn't a main moment where
Daunis and Jamie kind of transitioned from not making out to making out.
Excited to read the second one in this series, and I'll be keeping an eye on this author. I did feel like a little bit in the beginning that Jamie was kind of playing the second podcast seat who just asks questions so that the main speaker can fill in the audience on the answers, specifically about Native information. But I understand that that's a technique of learning that's more natural than Daunis just explaining everything like narrator breaking the fourth wall. Also, this is aimed at younger folks than me, and I may not have noticed it as much if I didn't know of the information already. I think this book leaves the reader with a WEALTH of knowledge about Indigenous people in a way that isn't teachy, and that's super valuable.

It took me a while to get into the story and the audiobook came through. Daunis was annoying with her back and forth with Jaime (like yall have a mission to complete) and she also was giving “not like other girls” at times. Also, I expected more thriller than romance. I also wanted more about Daunis’s biracial identity. Her routine also became repetitive with her daily run.

BUT it was giving with the cultural aspect and writing style. I also loved the author’s voice and storytelling.
I felt immersed into the setting and the world. Also the story was set around 2003-2004, which is interesting. (I was likely watching Disney Channel and coloring still so idk if it was realistic, lol).

I did enjoy the Native American culture and learning how the tribe works and their culture. Then, the romance got me in the second half. The relationship between Daunis and Jaime broke my heart but hopefully Someday. 😩😭 BUT I respect their decision.

Overall, 4 stars. The last like 25% was when it picked up and gave the story a boost. I was feeling 3 stars the majority of the book.

I’d check out the trigger warning first. This book was really interested in the topics it covered. I was a very personal display of how indigenous women don’t receive the justice they deserve for the traumas they experience. I really liked how the community and elders supported in un-static ways. I feel like grief was addressed fairly appropriately. I didn’t anticipate the twists of this book.

This was a powerful story. From all I’ve read, learned, and heard between books and my Indigenous friends, the themes in the story ring true, sadly and tragically, especially those of addiction and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Not sure how much FBI actually care, but I would like to think that regardless of if they do, there are people like Daunis whose courage is enough to bring healing to these tribes, which are and will continue to suffer from the generational trauma of forced colonization. My heart is heavy for every single one who has died as a result and live in destitution and despair today due to the generations of pain that cause people to turn to drugs and alcohol.

Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley is a YA book that doesn’t shy away from heavy themes. It tackles murder, addiction, the opioid crisis, and the structural oppression of Native Americans. But at its heart, it’s also a story of resilience.

Daunis’ deep connection to her community and heritage is the soul of this book. Her determination to protect and give back to her people adds so much hope and beauty, creating a powerful contrast to the darker themes.

This is a gripping read that balances tough topics with a strong sense of love, identity, and hope.

Isabella Star LaBlanc does a wonderful job giving the characters distinct voices and transporting emotion to the listener. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook.

This one started out mellow but was throwing some heavy punches by the end. A lot of dark stuff happens, but this is an unflinching tale of things that really happen. Really love the main character. A few pieces felt unrealistic, like the ending with the love interest, but maybe she's just much more mature than most teenagers.
