I love this book, especially since I felt unsatisfied with its predecessor.
I don't know if it's me, but Sookie is getting more real to her readers notably when she is thinking. I myself (and I know some women) would do the same pondering, having our own considerations and internal debates over intricate and onerous ordeal we have to face in our lives in this crazy, crazy world.
Sookie, obviously, was in a lot more peculiar situation with all the supernatural beings roaming around her. I applaud Harris for bringing to live such a strong woman. If I were Sookie, it was not impossible that I'd already been admitted to a mental institution because I couldn't cope with all the vampires, werewolves, shifters, fairies, elves, witches et cetera et cetera coming over to make my life become er 'colorful', or worse, determined to kill me in cold blood (of course inimaginable tortures came with the package).
This book, I think, showed a development of Sookie as a woman. She might not be your ideal heroine, but she still rocks. Courage and calmness, those are her strongest suits and both had served her well. Her relationship with Eric, as what I'm afraid of before, have its ups and downs. Politics oh politics. Not to mention, the old but not rusty concern for all mortals getting involved with immortals = until how long? will he still love me when I'm getting old and grey? But hey, is it not also the concern of many women in general haha!
All the characters around Sookie were fascinating and Harris weaved their stories, even if short, very well. I love the new development regarding Pam. It got me teary eyed. I love Sookie's friendship with Amelia - it's so real! Even best friends could give you hard times and you have to stand up for yourself. I love how Sookie and Bill (can't believe I'm saying this) still retain their friendship. Bill was such a sweetheart sometimes, it's hard not to like him, even if he broke Sookie's heart. The scene of Sookie and Bill in Bill's house was fricking hilarious (everytime Sookie said "Irrelevant!" I LOLed) Moreover, I love Sookie's dynamics with her fairy kins, Claude and Dermot. Goddamn faes and their nerves. I love also the fact that there were thing explained in this book. We are given more knowledge on Sookie's background and family history, which was quite illustrious. A lesson learned: Some people you know may know you far much better than you think (or know about them).
How about the action scenes? Harris still delivers. The last battle scene was so vivid I could almost see it in my mind. Well, with less blood obviously. But I trust HBO and the producers of True Blood could do justice when they're filming the nth season.
Dear Charlaine Harris, are you sure this series will be over in the next two books? I hope your contract is renewed again, because I love having adventures in Bon Temps :)

This was painful to read. I love this series but it’s been going downhill for a while and I think this is rock bottom.
Semi-spoiler rant
There were just so many irrelevant plot points in the book too, such as Alicide showing up in her bed. Stupid.

Sookie is really pathetic in the first half of the book. The long drawn out emergency hair cut because of the fire was so tedious to read. Her relationship with Eric in this book also makes her look pathetic. Um, ice pack???? Him biting her at the end and making her feel pain? Sookie, you are too feisty to be such a push over. There were just so many irrelevant plot points in the book too, such as Alicide showing up in her bed. Stupid.
Excellent read, so glad I stayed up late to finish the book. The worst part is knowing I have to wait another year for the next installment. A must read for all the Sookie fans out there!
I wish I could rate this 2.5 stars. I liked it, because I like this universe, but it didn't feel as likable as so many of the others that came before. I realize that doesn't completely make sense. It's really just a gut feeling that this book isn't quite up to par with the rest.

I've been getting tired of this series for awhile now. Sometimes I just want to shake Sookie and to tell her to WAKE UP and cut all ties from the loons.
And other times I want to just toss her to a non-friendly non-sexy vampire and let them eat her and get it over with.
Still, I found this particular book better. I like Eric, and it had some Eric-y moments.
I guess I have two big pet peeves one this one. The first one is Sookie's religious holier-than-thou attitude that was bugging me. Alright, I read Christian literature occasionally, and I've found a few books I really loved. I enjoy it if a character has a religious outlook, because it makes them an interesting character. Still, something is a bit frustrating when Sookie is talking about being a good christian lady and then going off to in the next paragraph. This book isn't the only one where this all happens, but it just got on my nerves this time around.
The other thing that bothers me is a giant spoiler, so read on with caution.
I guess, all in all, this book was better than the last one... and even better than a few back. In my mind, the series is petering off and I'm getting tired of the love... hexagons? No, not enough sides...hmm.
Still, if you're a die-hard fan of the series, go for it. It's an improvement from the last book.

Alright, Sookie is running from baddies (about all she ever does) and she hip-hops her way over to Bill's in the day time 'cause clearly that's going to help. Anyway, she decides THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION IS TO STRIP DOWN BUTT NAKED AND GO COZY UP WITH DEAD-BILL (Also naked). What the hell? Yes, I get the whole must-hide, oh look, Bill's day time hidey hole. That makes sense, but removing all her clothes so she didn't drip? a) wouldn't her hair be wet? And, uhm, dripping? B) And her underwear just happened to be that soaked???? COME ON. If you see some reason this all makes sense other than an excuse to get her naked with Bill, please explain.I guess, all in all, this book was better than the last one... and even better than a few back. Still not quiet as good as some of the earlier books in this series, but much better than the last book.
I think what I liked most about this book is that it set up a lot of questions and themes for the future. And though Charlaine Harris has been a bit skittish to directly address the issue that vampires will live forever and Sookie will not I finally feel like we're getting closer to an answer. Sookie seems to be headed towards distancing herself from the supernatural community. Added to that is a huge monkey wrench that gets thrown into her relationship with Eric. Despite being the overwhelming fan favorite, it's looking less and less like Sookie is going to end up with him in the end.
We also get more explanation about Sookie's family and all of the fairy weirdness and drama that goes along with it. And I am sure there's more fairy weirdness and drama just waiting around the corner (or rather in the next book).
This book, though not the best, is definitely a solid addition to the series.

This wasn't the best in the series, but I did enjoy it quite a bit. I had a hard time putting it down. I do find myself wondering what on earth else is out there (this time we met our first elf). It's kind of hard to continue to suspend my disbelief when I consider the entire Sookie world as a whole. But for now, getting one little piece at a time, it's ok. Predictable, but ok. When we found out about Sam, it was AMAZING. Now, new mythological creatures are no big whoop.
