I definitely thought it was better than the last one. I loved the idea of Sookie finding out more of her heritage from Gran's attic. This one moves quickly but doesn't necessarily have the ending that I hoped for (not from a writing standpoint, just a readers). It makes me ready for #12. Please tell me she doesn't end up back with Bill.
It was fun, as all the Sookie books are, but not as much fun as others have been. It contained much more serious subject matter and Sookie isn't her usual happy, sunny self.
Plus, only one sex scene which is a very low count compared to the others. :)

It was a nice easy, summer reading book! I finished this over the weekend.
A little on the disappointing side. It was good, but it doesn't seem to have that same "oomph" the first 8 had. I will definitely keep reading these until the end, but I just hope Ms. Harris finds that spark again that I know and love from Sookie.
It’s not that the story was bad, it’s just that the story wasn’t fun to read. If I want to feel melancholy I’ll read literary fiction.
I find myself annoyed with Sookies … ambivalence? She’s known Eric was keeping a secret for a while and never pushes him even though it’s obviously got something to do with herself. She takes action and then regrets it all the time. Shaman drugs, assassination plots, making her bond breaking her bond.
It sorta feels like I’m reading about a grumpy grandma in the body of a young waitress. Sookie was such a fun character and now she’s like a little depressed automaton that refuses to talk honestly with Eric, had no boundaries, and has no idea what she wants from her life. Eric’s charcater has been all his negative traits and none of his fun traits in this book. We get to end with a mean bite. I swear this author doesn’t know how to write a love story.
I hate the whole her telepathy was a demon birth gift. Just let it be a fairy human thing. Not everything needs an explanation. And the stupid love tolken is a ticking “magic hand wave” waiting to happen.
Whatever I’m done with all the guys in these books. The only one left to ruin is Sam, which has been done in slow degrees of most boring guy ever who could be cool but has no hidden depth. Someone please erase Erics memories again, give Sookie more Fairy juice and let them hide in the woods ever after.

Let me just say that "Dead Reckoning" makes up for how awesomely bad the previous two books were. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.
Sookie Stackhouse comes bounding back into ours lives with Charlaine Harris's 11th book on Bon Temps and its colourful residents, both dead and alive!
This book in my opinion is just as fresh, fast paced, witty and endearing as the 10 before it and the romance between Sookie and Eric, our centuries old Viking Vampire, continued to excite, confuse and engage me throughout the book. Will their romance survive, can it against these odds? Or will Sookie's first love, Bill Compton, the war hero vampire I personally fell head over heels for with our southern telepathic waitress, break the ice around her heart and once again get his 'fangs' into her?
Or could this be the year of the werewolf? There has always been a smouldering attraction and one place, wrong time situation between our girl and Alcide, now Packmaster to the Weres? Will a warm body once again hold Sookie close?
I loved this book and already have book 12, as yet untitled, on pre-order, but with the publication date not till May 2012, can we take the suspense. Personally, the answer is a resounding NO!
Charlaine Harris has said that she thought she would only write 2-3 more books and also stated that she would never make our southern belle Sookie into a vampire! Something I am sure Sookie, our tanned sunbunny, would surely heave a sigh of relief at, but if she stays human, what will become of her relationship with Eric, or Bill? Will she settle down and raise some were pups with Alcide?
Wherever Charlaine Harris takes the characters, I for one will be clinging along for the ride, Charlaine, we bow before you, more please!!

Original review in 2011: I wasn't very impressed with this one. It didn't have nearly as much substance as the others.
And I'm unsure, but I thought this was the last one? It left with a mighty big cliffhanger, so I can only assume, I was misinformed.
---
Reread in 2017: I had originally rated this at 3 stars, but after this reread, I bumped it up to 4 stars. I'm not even sure what I was talking about because this book definitely had substance. There was plenty of moving parts to different pieces of the story and I am ready to finally get to book 12 and 13, to finish out the series. I realized that I had flipped through the novella-type book that comes after book 13 and I know who Sookie ends up with, unfortunately.

I think this is probably one of the best Sookie books for a while. There were a lot of twists and turns. It definitely made me ready to see where the story will go next!
