Eh, it was okay. It's not winning any Wendy awards.

I find that as I branch out into other UF books, I like this one less and less.

This book was so godawful I don't even know what to say. I am so disappointed in the direction this series has taken, but I'm not entirely surprised. It's been going down hill since book five I think, and now it's clear that Harris is grasping at straws for a plot and character development. I had to force myself to finish this book, which is a complete 180 to how I devoured the first four. So sad.

Dead Reckoning was... painful. I seriously can't think of one redeeming quality. Here's a list of random thoughts because this book doesn't deserve an in-depth review:

- Not even the Killing Spree Scene that happens in every single book could save this one, and that's saying a lot.

- The relationship between Sookie and Eric was so unbelievable I started to wonder why they were together at all about 50 pages in. They maybe had three or four scenes together in the entire book which is strange since the concept of their relationship dominates the first half of the book, with Sookie wondering if she really loves Eric or they're just together because of their blood bond.

- I have no idea why Harris has kept Bill alive. He's entirely useless and wasn't needed at all in this book.

- I don't give a damn about the history of the Stackhouse family.

- Where the hell is Jason? I don't think he even had a scene in this book.

- Leave Bubba alone.

- The scene with Alcide was so embarrassing. Absolutely ridiculous, unnecessary, and forced. I don't know what Harris was thinking.

- The ending was complete crap. Sookie sitting down to watch an episode of Jeopardy! is NOT a conclusion. Her "what if..." and "I wondered what happened..." is just Bad Writing. I dare anyone to defend this book to me, actually.

- Needs more Pam.

- I DON'T CARE ABOUT OUTFITS, HOW YOU SET THE TABLE, WHAT YOU BOUGHT AT THE GROCERY STORE, ETC. SOOKIE. MOVE THE FUCKING PLOT ALONG, PLEASE. STOP DAWDLING.

- Dermot and Claude are just bad characters.

- This is not worth $27. Save your money.

I don't even know. I doubt I'll read the next book. This series is dead to me.

coming soon

So the first books in this series were action-filled, exciting adventures. The last few books have been veering off that path. This one seemed to bring back a little more action than the last few, but the first half (or maybe more) of the book is pretty boring. I will continue reading this series until the end - only because I need to know everything that happens. However, I feel that the books will only continue to disappoint.

Dead Reckoning is about the point in my re-reads of this series where I lose interest. It feels like filler, and it reads like Harris has the end in sight, making abrupt changes unaligned with the characters’ personalities and choices of the previous books, in order to fit the plan. This is also the book that pushes me beyond my tolerance of Harris’ descriptions of the skin tones of Black and Brown people as food: chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, etc. Why at this point, 10 books into the series, didn’t someone advise her to expand her vocabulary?

A good continuation in the series. Lots of action. Lots of supernatural creatures. Some tension and intrigue with Sookie's two vampire squeezes. There's even the introduction of an intriguing magical item. Overall, this was a good read that kept me interested in the series and helped propel it forward.

Note: For this series, I highly recommend the audio version. Johanna Parker does a great job with the audio narration, adding extra personality and oomph to the book, which I think it benefits from, as the writing is fairly simplistic.

The thing is that I'm kinda addicted to the characters. Especially those of Eric and Pam. And therefore I keep reading the books even though I find them trashy. I've just read this one, and it took me a day, and I'm already thinking about how the story will develop. Really not healthy!

From the quality point of view this book is equal to McDonald's cheeseburger. Appetizing while being eaten, half an hour latter your hungry again and all that is left is bad indigestion...
