"Looked pale under her makeup" - this statement popped up way too many times. No one should be able to see you're gone pale under makeup. That's the point of makeup.
The first half of the books really capture me but the second half drags on, it's filled with minutiae of the everyday. You can skip ahead when Clare is having miscarriages to when she has a baby and you'll be fine, you won't lose any plot development. The book seems to regain some of its momentum and charm by the end.
I like the time-traveling concept and the jumps in time are easy to follow. That said, I think the book would benefit from being a bit shorter, sometimes it felt like reading a list of names.
The characters, especially Clare, aren't really developed. She was more interesting as a child than a grown-up. It's really hard to care about them, and the book gets quite melodramatic at times, wanting us to care.
Another thing that bothered me was when teenaged Clare loses her virginity to a much older Henry. Really felt he should have let her have some non-Henry experiences. Not to mention, how clumsily written are the sex scenes. Unnecessary too.
Also, I was expecting some adventures but, unfortunately, there really aren't any past Henry's childhood. Such a waste of good premise.

Listened to the audio book—two excellent narrators! Writing style was unique, and fit the subject matter. Interesting concept. Took me a while to care about the characters—they're upper class so it was hard to relate to them. Took off a star due to overly descriptive sexual content throughout and I can't recommend it because of that. The prose of the novel was very descriptive, so the author was consistent in this. But that level of description made it vulgar and unnecessary.
