I love Ishiguro'w work. Most of his work. This, as I said in an earlier update, was a slog. A post-Arthurian "Waiting for Godot" without the comic relief. I found it frustratingly slow and the dialogue oddly mannered. Ishiguro uses unreliable narrators quite frequently but in this novel, in which everyone is unreliable due to the mist of forgetting that has encomapssed the land, the truth remains impenetrable throughout. Even as I write this I find a mist of not remembering descending upon me. In a month I imagine all I will really remember about this novel is how disappointed I was with it.

I was really nervous to pick up another Ishiguro book after how much I disliked “An artist of the floating word”, but I was pleasantly surprised! This book was beautifully written and I loved the fantasy elements woven into the main story.

I mean . . . sure, okay. The language is simple and direct, and you'd think I would have finished it sooner, but it was a chore to pick up. I had no feelings -- good or bad -- for any of the characters. I thought the plot would have interested me (dragons! epic quests!), but I just didn't care for it.
Things happened, and then it ended.
Such is life.

Truly masterful writing that embodies the essence and amnesia of grief, not only through use of words, but through overall form and essence. I only continue to realize the mastery of this book the more I reflect on it.

In the beginning of this book, I thought I knew what was going to happen. Then, I was whisked away by the story and allowed the denial to set in. On the very last page, I was sore to realize I had been right all along. Such is the essence of grief, denial, and acceptance.

I truly believe this one of the rare books that changes a reader forever.

I really enjoyed the mystical quality of this book. The power of memory, joy and loss really hits at the end.
