I never write reviews but as a women in STEM specifically someone who is in a phd program for chemistry I feel like I have an unique perspective on this book. I could write a whole thesis on this book but to summarize:
It is a non scientist, white feminist take on women in chemistry. That is to say, this book’s understanding of women in stem is about as good as the feminist ideals it portrays…mediocre at best.

If you are a women in STEM let me set your expectations about this book. It’s not for us. Just turn off your brain and enjoy it as a dumb story. Yes, the writing is good and the story was compelling (the only reason why I didn’t give the book a one star) but I could not overlook how badly this book missed the message it was trying to portray. Yes, the scientific terminology is technically correct but it is really just a combination of big words that mean nothing. There was more detailed description of rowing than actual science which was disappointing.

I was really excited to read this book but the second I saw that the main character’s personality was a very stereotypical portrayal of a women in STEM, I knew it was downhill. I’m not trying to dissuade people from reading this book just adjust your expectations contrary to what the title and reviews on the back are trying to tell you.

Personally I think Elizabeth Zot would have hated this book. Most of her character development is due to a man and a child. A big reason why she got that TV job in the first place was because of her looks. Also, she was only able to pursue her research in the end because her baby daddy’s rich family intervened. She was never able to fully grasp the position she was in and it hindered her ability to accomplish her dreams. She only got there in the end due to circumstance and movie magic.
