I have to say, I wasn't hooked by "Hooked." I had high hopes, but ultimately felt let down. I was initially led to believe it was a romantasy, probably because it was shelved alongside other books in that genre. However, I wouldn't even categorize it as dark romance. It reminded me of "Twisted Love," featuring a mildly morally gray character, but I didn’t find James convincing as the villain.
Wendy’s transformation from a whiny, damsel-in-distress virgin to a completely different person by the end was perplexing to me. Additionally, the fact that she is just 20 years old in a contemporary setting bothered me. At least in "Haunting Adaline," the protagonist is in her late 20s and has a clearer sense of identity, independence, along with a social life and career. I dislike when female leads seem to exist solely as an extension of the MMC. At least in romantasy I can feel comfortable with the 500 year old age gap, as most of the time they are not even human.

The characters and general plot were fine. But certain nuances were missing to make it great

What a fun rendition of Peter Pan. The audiobook narrators were enjoyable to listen to. My biggest complaint is that the MMC made a huge mistake that negatively affected the FMC, and when he realized he screwed up, he didn’t grovel nearly as much as he should have. She was like, oh no worries I totally understand and then they moved on. Besides that, it was fun to read and hard to put down. 3/5

4/5 stars

I loved this book so much more than I expected. It is super different from my usual taste in books, but I absolutely enjoyed every second of this. It was kind of funny, running across all the Peter Pan names and references, but that was just surface level. The characters were so thoroughly developed with such deep and dark backstories that it just drew me in.

The last 10% of the book had my jaw on the floor because I did NOT see that coming. I can't say any more without spoiling, but I absolutely loved this.

I guess sometimes it's fun to love the villain.
