I’m fairly selective about my nonfiction reads, and this was 100% up my alley (thanks, Elyse, for the recommendation!) I absolutely loved this and learned so much. It was written almost like a story, with interconnected plot lines and fascinating characters. Although it did end on a very depressing note with The Apprentice 😳, this was a true gift that I savored one chapter at a time. One random absolute highlight for me: remembering The Joe Schmo Show, a wild premise for its time and a favorite of mine from back in the day.

DID NOT FINISH

amusingly written and well researched, but I’ve realized I’m just not willing to read a 464-page history of reality tv. I’m usually interested in the history and evolution of pop culture, but maybe not “464 pages” interested.

I am not a watcher of reality television; it’s never interested me in the least, and the few I do see I only end up watching a few episodes as I get too irritated.
However I do LOVE a behind-the-scenes story, and have always been way more interested in the production side of movies/tv/theater than of the actual “talent” part.

So while I didn’t get all of the references to most of the “actors” being discussed, the building of these types of entertainment was very interesting.
My favorite stories were from Survivor and the Apprentice. Those sections are worth reading the entire book.

This book did profiles very well. Some (most) of these people are absolute monsters. Wasn't cohesive beside the rushed and underdeveloped epilogue's insistence it was, but that itself was not a fault.
