A bit overencumbered with characters that conveniently join sides within pages and mustache-twirling type villains. But I loved the animal-shifting aspect as a kid and generally watching Daine's wild magic progression throughout the series as a whole. I'm excited to jump into Emperor Mage, it's been years but I remember loving the characters and plot twists involved in the Carthaki episode, especially when we've heard so much about this villainous emperor Ozorne.
More like 3.5 stars. I think I would really like to live in Pierce's world, especially be acquainted with all the cool people and the animals. That said, Pierce is the only author, I think, who can make me weep over a death of a cat. That's the second time she does this... or maybe third... this woman needs to stop killing cats! The days she kills a dog I'll probably go into mourning for a week.
Honestly I thought these books would be more tied together, I realize there are overlapping themes, but otherwise Daine seems to be needed at random places. Her powers seem to be growing, and no sign of stopping. I wish there was more interaction between her and Numair, but I guess you can't have it all. Also, people don't seem to be freaked out about immortals as much as I thought they would be, or maybe it's because it's Daine and she's more accepting of them, and or, she's interacts more with regular animals in the stories. We'll see how this goes in the next book.
Also, poor Jon, this is like the third time someone tries to overthrow him, and a third time a psychotic woman wants the throne.

Man I loved this series! We see a much wilder side of Daine as she tries to help her Wolf friends and save their home from the threat of the local Nobles that run the land. There was some great character development here, as well as a noticeable growth in Daine's powers which I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, I loved seeing a softer side to one of the Stormwings, Rikash, rather than them just being a constant enemy to the story. Numair's and Daine's relationship is great to read about, and there is a noticeable development which was really nice to read. Sometimes slow-burning is the best way! Great read!
In [b:Wolf-speaker|24094|Wolf-speaker (Immortals, #2)|Tamora Pierce|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1167520027s/24094.jpg|1090193], Daine is called upon by her wolf pack to help in a troubled region of Tortall. She doesn't expect such trouble or suspect what powerful forces have brought her to Dunlath to be a bridge for all the People.
This was an enjoyable read. It sets the groundwork for what is to come in the story of Daine, and it contained a lot of fun characters.

I read this immediately after reading the first (excellent!) book in the series. Slightly different cast of supporting characters, and Daine is forced to deal with more things on her own.
Still really good.

This is definitely one of my favorite fantasy series. I still love these characters to death, and the new characters are awesome as well. This book is a bit of a transition book, however, as it really is just building up the plot for the rest of the series. So it's got a little bit of "second-book" syndrome. But I actually enjoyed it much more as an adult and the audio books are super fun to listen to.
I'm loving this series! This one was a particular favorite because I am an animal lover :)
Reread 03/20 - hadn't reread in awhile so went in on the whole series. This was my favorite of this quartet because of the supporting characters - Brokefang and the wolf pack, Maura, Rikash, Flicker the squirrel, the cats. Daine however continued to annoy me, which might be due to reading this from an adult perspective.
