More wild magic plus a wolf pack!

still as good as the first time!

I enjoyed Wolf-Speaker even more than its predecessor. I felt like, in Wild Magic, Daine had come into her own without realizing it by the end of the story, and that Wolf-Speaker is the story of her testing, so to speak.

I enjoyed meeting the new (fully-fleshed-out) characters, but I enjoyed watching Daine fend for herself and protect others even more. She is, in the course of the story, separated from the adults that gave her guidance and support in Wild Magic, and the stakes become so dire that it is essentially a sink-or-swim moment. I liked watching her go from a confused newcomer to Tortall (in the first book) to a protector of both people and animals. It was an intensely satisfying read.

Daine has wild magic. She can talk and sway the actions of animals. So when Daine is summoned by a pack of wolves who saved Daine’s life years ago, she goes without thinking, taking her mentor, the legendary mage Numair. They travel to the Dunlath Valley, but both are shocked at the danger that awaits them. The animals and humans of the valley’s lives are in danger as the valley’s rulers have been blinded by greed and power, and they plans to overthrow the king must be stopped at all costs…

I kinda wish I discovered Tamora Pierce when I was younger and in the depths on my Harry Potter obsession. I feel that, if I had, I would be obsessed with all her series, in the same way I am with [a:Garth Nix|8347|Garth Nix|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1207583754p2/8347.jpg], who I discovered while the world is waiting for [b:Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix|444327|Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5)|J.K. Rowling|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1432211500l/444327._SY75_.jpg|2809203].

But, I have discovered her now, as a thirty-something. Even though I’ve know her name for YEARS (but not read her due to the Fear as she sounds like A Big Deal), it’s one now I’ve gone “Am reading her now!”

Like I said, I wish I discovered her sooner as I have fun listening to this. I find that, with this and the previous novels I’ve read or listen to that her female characters are interesting and refreshing in the world of fantasy. It feels like she paved the way for strong, interesting, complex female leads within the genre.

Am going to be honest now, while I did like this, I sense I liked [b:Wild Magic|40500725|Wild Magic (The Immortals, #1)|Tamora Pierce|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1529961293l/40500725._SY75_.jpg|1171314] and [b:First Test|47956140|First Test (Protector of the Small, #1)|Tamora Pierce|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1567065502l/47956140._SY75_.jpg|1375705] more. There feels like there’s more of a plot, whereas this felt… I can’t explain it, but I didn’t engage with this in the same way as the previous two. I wonder if it’s a bit of a filler book, where ideas and characters are introduced to set-up the later books in the series.

I did like this and I do plan to continue on my Tamora Pierce reading adventure in the next few months, but this doesn’t feel as strong as First Test or Wild Magic, but I do think this is setting something up which is going to be important.

I love Tamora Pierce and this series (mainly out of love for the Song of a Lioness series). I think maybe this is my fault but I find Daine a less compelling and relatable character than Alanna. Maybe it’s because of her age or her character, but she seems to be missing the extra something that made Alanna so interesting.
