There were parts of this on I really liked and other I didn't.
The overall feel of this one was slow. It was a lot of introspection and learning new skills on Daine's part. This is important to the over all development of her character but its kinda boring.

I like the animals. The wolf pack is interesting especially because not all the wolves are friendly and fun. I like Maura and Rikish grows on you.

I enjoyed the portions of this book that dealt with the humans, but sadly that was not the larger portion. I did not enjoy the exploration through other animal's bodies that marked most of the action for this novel. I'm not against such plot devices but I did not enjoy it here. I am going on in the series though.

Reread. Good fun. Nothing too amazing or disappointing. Still enjoying revisiting this series.

Although I myself was never an animal lover as a child, I still really enjoy the way this book explores the affinity that its protagonist, Daine, has for animals. It's a magical affinity, but it's also just a bone-deep respect and understanding. It would have been simple for Pierce to anthropomorphize the animal characters to the point of making them human minds in animal bodies, but instead we get this really fascinating interplay between the two. In fact, one of the central conflicts of this novel, the second in the quartet, is that Daine's wolf friends have begun to act too human because of her influence. She loves her friends, but she doesn't want them to become human any more than she wants to be lost completely to her animal nature. This book isn't a favorite of mine or anything, but I did have a good time with it. If I could give it a fraction, it would probably rest at 3.5 stars.
