Tamora Pierce

4.16 AVERAGE

Daine has settled in well to living and working with the Riders and learning more about her wild magic with the mage Numair. When a few Riders groups go missing in an area shielded by magic, they are sent to investigate. Along the way Daine's old wolf pack finds them, and she learns not only how they are different from normal wolves from their involvement with her, but also that something strange is going on at Dunlath castle. It will be up to her and her animal friends to get to the bottom of it all.
It's easy to see why I started to like wolves years ago, with the Long Lake Pack. And can't forget the apple tree - I adore the short story that appears in another book because of events in this one. Daine has to learn much more about understanding and especially tolerance, the latter of which Numair tried to tell her, but she had to come to learn on her own in meeting Maura and Lord Rikash. Then of course, there is her "slipping in" to animal consciousnesses and seeing and experiencing the world through their eyes - something I have always loved. Really, Daine's story is the one which I relate the most, and of all of Pierce's heroines, Daine is my favorite. The ways Daine grows in this book alone are impressive, as she finds herself pushed to the limits of her tolerance, her knowledge, her skills, and starts to understand better her possible role in the interconnected world of humans, People, and immortals.

I feel guilty giving any Tamora Pierce book less than 5 stars—this one just really drags for me, both in pace and in frustration at the challenges (that we are supposed to feel frustrated by as our heroine faces them). Perhaps she’s just TOO good at getting me to take th perspective of our protagonist in this one! Worth reading to get through the character’s plot lines across the series, but not one I ever come back to on its own.

This is just a highly enjoyable re-read for me as I move from romantasy to romantasy. Sometimes a girl needs a brain break, okay?

I especially liked how she comes to terms with her worst nightmare from the previous book in relation to the wolf pack.
Was a fun lighthearted book.
