Very interesting story. It did seem to stick just to the surface of his life, though. I would have liked to hear more detail. He seems like he was an amazingly upbeat and happy man considering the many sad events in his life.

This book was excellent

Really good.  Read it.

5 stars for the memoir itself. If you’re a WWII buff and you haven’t read this, do yourself a favor and get on it! Hearing about how the code was devised was incredible.

I was shocked to learn from this that the US bombed Tokyo. We’d always learned in school that the Japanese surrendered  after both atom bombs were dropped, but no! Even after Nagasaki they refused to surrender, so the US bombed Tokyo - not with atom bombs, but bombed nonetheless - and that’s what did it. Turns my stomach.

There was a “bonus interview” tacked onto the end I could’ve done without - would’ve been better if Chester got to speak more, but it was mostly Judith reiterating the things we learned in the book. I did love getting to hear Chester speak in code.

This was a fantastic book. I loved everything about it. This is a memoir of one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers. He helped make the unbreakable code that was so important to the Pacific theater in WWII. I loved reading about his life before the Marines. I loved reading about the beauty and culture of the Navajo Nation. I loved reading about the amazing efforts of the Navajo Code Talkers. This book only deepened the love I already had for the Diné. I hope one day to return to visit the Navajo Nation again. #book9 #readinggoals2023 #navajocodetalkers #wwii #navajonation #diné #weareallstoriesintheend
