As always, Patchett weaves a beautiful story full of deep character development. Reading her words is like listening to beautiful music, it ebbs and flows in all the right places.
Really glad I didn't read the reviews before I read this book. They are all over the map, the main complaint seeming to be the "trite ness" of the storyline. And while some of that is deserved, Ann Patchett is such a beautiful writer. The detail in this story is well written. I read this all in one sitting on a long road trip and it kept me happily occupied for many hours. Glad I had something this engaging to read.
I adore Anne Patchett. I can't get enough of her writing. Although I didn't like this book as much as "Truth and Beauty" or "The Magician's Assistant" it still was one that I couldn't put down. The subtle magic of her characters is very intriguing.

Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors. She has a way of showing the beauty of humanity, even in a story that mostly spans 2 days. Her language is gorgeous and makes you want to stay in the boom awhile.

Ann Patchett weaves a tight story, broadly about race and class, but also about what makes a family. With less than 300 pages, the plot moves quickly, with most of the action occurring over a 24-hour period, but in Anne's excellent hands, the characters do not lack depth or development. The fast pace echoes the title of the book, and leaves the reader feeling a little breathless, but not disappointed. Ann Patchett is one of a small group of authors who can tell a story but also write beautifully. My only regret is not reading this novel sooner.
