Pretty good I guess. Not the revolutionary treatise on state policing of black families that it could have been, but also not naive. Ending was weird. Either abrupt or too long. I like that Patchett always seems to know that the parents she writes are bad, and that their complications and sins are neither redeemed nor used as grounds to discard the person

Engaging, quick and enjoyable read.

Maaaaaybe 3.5? In theory this was all good things, quick timeline, complicated family dynamics, and a woman who isn’t who she appears to be…but still it failed to captivate me. I think the multi-POVs were too much, we really could’ve done without both Sullivans.

The book does some interesting things. It opens with this fantastic story about a statue that I probably could have read an entire novel about. I can see it doing cool things with repetition and layered meanings. It talks about race, class, family dynamics, how our choices affect other people, all that good stuff. But for all the talking it does, I'm not sure what it's trying to tell me.

Just finished it. It's no Bel Canto or (my real favorite) Truth & Beauty. Something is a bit cold about it, but the writing is, of course, beautiful. It went over my head more than a bit, but I love Ann Patchett and can't resist anything she writes.
