This is my second book of Ann Pratchett. I absolutely loved it. Some sentences are little gems that take your breath away. She can draw you in the world and lives of the characters in such an intimate way. It's for me a book about family and identity and the complex ties that bind them are not always as clear as they seem and how you pass on a legacy.
I was underwhelmed--interesting premise, but felt the author didn't do much with it.
I loved this book. I hope Ann Patchett never stops writing. It was filled with interesting well defined characters with a plot that was pretty believable. Recommend!
This is my second Patchett novel (2016’s Commonwealth was excellent) so I’m not quite sure why her books enflame fans & haters alike. There’s not much to get worked up about in this intimate Boston fable that touches ever-so-lightly on race, faith & family. Widowed former mayor has 2 adopted black sons. A snowy evening car accident brings together a colorful cast, all with stories to tell, secrets to hide & names like Tip & Tennessee. It’s burdened with clichés & coincidences. (Why are so many people out in a snowstorm?) Contrived, but genial.
Ann Patchett can be a strange author - sometimes her books don't really go anywhere. This one bucks that trend though- it's a must read.

2 stars because I did finish it, but I was mad at myself for wasting the time on this story that made no sense, about characters that were not believable.
A really enjoyable read. The author of Bel Canto weaves a fast-paced story about race relations, politics, adoption quagmires, family disfunctions. I most enjoyed her writing style -- it is both hypnotic and melodic.
