Okay. I was not a huge fan of the first book for a number of reasons but I was convinced to read the second one, and I like it quite a bit. It hits so many of my favorite tropes: found family, enemies to lovers, and bad guy with a heart of gold.

Feyre still gets on my nerves for being dense and dramatic about things, but her character growth makes her a much more interesting protagonist in this book. The plot also feels a lot more put together than in book 1, and there's not a lot of downtime. Book 1 was really slow until the big reveal fully halfway through the book which also gave me whiplash like I had started reading an entirely different book. Not this one! The character development and reveals throughout the book added so much to the world building and depth of the story. I am also very much here for the ending.

While reading book 1, I was very annoyed with the introduction of Rhysand, but I've got to say, I'm completely sold now. Sorry not sorry Tamlin. Kinda makes me want to go back and reread the first book, and see if I can see those red flags that I missed the first time around. I always was aware that Rhys was not the villian. He was clearly playing his own game of deception to take down the evil lady. Only Feyre could have missed the way he protected her and the other faeries as much as possible without losing the ear and trust of the real villian. But I did not predict the depth of his character!!! He is absolutely everything I want in the male lead. (btw, the constant referring to characters as males and females is very weird. Is it an effort to avoid calling faeries men?). He's dark, he's got a bad reputation, he's extremely powerful, he's tortured by his past, he's intense, he's kind, he's cunning, he loves his people fiercely, the whole avenging dark angel aesthetic, and he is a raging FEMINIST! The way he respects and trusts the decisions of his friends as adults even when he is worried for them is lovely. Not that he'll let them get themselves hurt, but he knows how competent they are and instead of trying to stop them, he does his best to equip them for what they will face and support them however they need it.

And god bless, not a love triangle. The relationships grow entirely naturally in this book.

TW: relationship abuse, torture, off screen rape, lots of violence, on screen sex

This book picks up not long after the events of A Court of Thorns and Roses. Feyre and Tamlin are deeply scarred by what happened Under The Mountain and their relationship is suffering too; the portrayable of trauma felt really authentic.

This is my best friend's favourite series so I went into this book knowing some tidbits of information which made for it really enjoyable when I saw things that I knew were going to happen, happen.

This book is junk food for the soul and is pretty enjoyable from start to finish. I found the description of Velaris when we first see it a little on the lengthy side and felt drawn out of the book but otherwise it is pretty faultless for what it is i.e. a not very diverse fairy romance featuring the chosen one trope.

Get you a morally grey man who moves as fast as Rhysand! Feyre said she like likes him so he made her the high lady of the night out in like, under a week!

I just... I don't even know what to say at this point. Y'all have truly bamboozled me with this series. The most common thing I have heard about this series, and this book in particular, is how it's endless smut. But it's not??? There's some at the start of the book and then chapter 55 SJM went OFF but that's pretty much it. Honestly, this is a really interesting story featuring a main character dealing with ptsd and possibly other mental health issues (it read as depression to me) while also having to fight in a war to save a world she's only just become a part of, as well as the world she was forced to leave behind. It's a really quick read with, in my opinion, really well-written characters and I already can't wait to pick up book 3!
