I liked this a lot more than I probably should have considering how it’s playing in the exact same space as Erin Morgenstern’s The Starless Sea, which was a book that I found really tedious and annoying. and this did have some of the same annoyances (characters and relationships not super well fleshed out, “magical” setting and atmosphere that feels vague and insubstantial). yet the plot was just grounded enough and the characters just interesting enough that I really got into it by the end. bonus points for the romance which was sweet and well done.

Full review incoming but damn, this far into the book (1/3) I usually care a bit more about the characters and the stakes, and the plot really starts moving… not around here, partner. The pacing was off, some parts were not expanded enough yet others were completely unnecessary. Some of the characters were really likable, but I didn’t really care for the FMC and I constantly felt like she was further than arm’s length. Also, I hate when a big part of the plot is just not communicating, this far into the book the plot was literally just the uncles not wanting to tell the FMC anything even though “shit was starting to hit the fan” (in quotations because we are told that things are ramping up, we feel the slightest shift, but really nothing was happening so how is everything going to shit if there’s literally nothing??). The prose was beautiful and I loved the aesthetic and the ideas, I might have to write a fanfic to use these elements to my liking lol
