This presented as an adult fantasy about a family curse, keys to other worlds, scholars and gods but it read YA or new adult to me. It’s not easy to find stand-alone books in the fantasy genre but maybe this book is the reason why? The pacing wasn’t consistent and whilst I enjoyed the first half of the book, the second half dragged, and I skimmed the last quarter to find out how it finished.
I would have liked more details about the scholars and the structure of their society, and some plot details didn’t make a lot of sense. For example, the main character Violet is shut away by her Uncles as a child to protect her but suddenly can work in a café at 18? It didn’t make sense that someone who was home schooled, had no friends, socialisation, etc. could seamlessly find a job, interact with staff and customers without any adjustments!! But it’s a debut novel and I see the author’s potential so would read her again.

Eh, I liked the set up. I liked the characters. The execution left a bit to be desired. I needed homeboy to sack up. The whole EE thing at the end just dragged? A bit too much going on with the Russian guy side plot. I’d still read the next in the series because where tf is ME? Or did I miss that completely? Idk parts felt unresolved.

This book wasn’t bad…but also not super memorable. I read it pretty fast which means plot was good enough to keep me interested. But also the relationships and who is who is complicated and hard to follow, so in the end I just didn’t feel that I got as much out of it as I could have
