Richelle Mead we need to talk. What happened??? This series had a GREAT start, you had all the elements and yet the ending is such a mess???

So I know for a lot of people the turning point was Blood Promise but I actually enjoyed that one way more than Spirit Bound and Last Sacrifice. I mean, at least it had a plot and not a bunch of not surprising at all plot twist and crazy jail breaks. Yes, the plot doesn't matter at all to the rest of the series, and the book ends the same way it starts, but oh well. I enjoyed reading about Dimitri's family, I wish all the characters we met in that book would have been relevant.

However, in Spirit Bound Mead seems to think that we don't need more drama, no, we need ALL the drama. I feel like in the last two books SO MUCH happened that I didn't even had time to process it all. I was done with the book like okay Idk what the hell happened here. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it and I still love this series is just that the first half is clearly more thought and planned than the rest.

I really hate that from Blood Promise the bond became a narrative tool. I feel like Mead overuses it way too much. It's not credible and it's a really boring way of showing that pov. I think letting Lissa be a narrator would have been way more interesting, even if Rose was still able to check up on her. But there were times where Rose would be CLIMBING while seeing through Lissa's eyes and I was like what? really? Also we really don't need her snarky comments all the time.

This is unpopular but I like Rose. However, I 100% get the hate. In this book she messed up big time. Why on earth would you not trust your friends and family and think you know best than anyone else? And the most annoying thing: her relationship with Adrian. I am mad that Mead attempted this love triangle.
Spoiler From the very beginning it was very obvious that Rose x Adrian was doomed. I've never liked Adrian and yet in this book I felt so bad for him. Rose has been using him since Dimitri turned strigoi and she just agrees to go out with him in return for the small favour of lending her a fortune (what). Dimitri is back and do you expect us to believe they will not end together? Please. I hated that Rose cheated on Adrian and the later talk? Yeah I can't love you because you need to love yourself first. You're too dependent. Wow. What a bitch.

Although the ending is such a mess at least we got something. I like how it ends, I'm just not a big fan of the process I think Mead could have arrived to the same ending doing things way differently. I mean there's so much that is absolutely not necessary (the tarot cards?) and
Spoiler did we really needed the whole big drama Tasha was the one who actually killed the queen? Hello new Tasha nice to meet you. The Tasha I new from the first books would not frame and 18 yo girl for killing the queen just because she stole???? her man??? big yikes.

Enough with my rant. This series is still one of my faves but the downfall of it all has prevented me from reading Bloodlines for a while. Will this be the year?

Good ending to the series.

__________

this. was. excellent.
I thought this was a really well done conclusion to the series and I had a FANTASTIC time reading it. Just like when I read the Selection series, I'll have to admit that there are parts in this and the previous books that...have not necessarily held up that well. But thats a calculated risk I take when I dive into a series of older YA books.

While this whole operation of reading this series was initially planned as a fun little way to distract myself from my upcoming (now finished) written finals and hunting for a new apartment - it ended up really reanimating my motivation to read.
medium-paced

As the final chapter closes to this amazing series, all I felt was a bittersweet goodbye. It’s so hard to let go of a series you love, and I definitely love the Vampire Academy series.

The previous book, Spirit Bound, was closed on a big cliffhanger, so I couldn’t wait for Last Sacrifice to be released. I had to restrain myself from combing through all of So. Cal. B&N’s and Borders the day before to see if any had stocked it earlier. I had been waiting such a long time for this book, and thankfully, it was one that totally lived up to my expectations (more or less).

I’ve previously mentioned that in every book, you could see Rose maturing from the hard-headed, stubborn, outburst-prone snark that she was... Well, actually, she’s still all those things! However, Rose also pissed me off in this novel. Probably moreso than she did in Blood Promise. The actions she did towards the end of the book pissed me off so damn much. I can’t say too much without being spoilery, but I’ll say this: Rose had matured so much since Vampire Academy, but with the actions she took in Last Sacrifice, it felt like she was going downhill instead of maturing. She was taking steps back. What Rose did was not what I would have expected of her character – she’s better than that, so when it happened, I was nothing short of disappointed.

Most of the book was action-packed. Rose was a fugitive and was running from the Guardians, so there was a lot of running, close-calls, and insane plans from front to finish. For someone who is supposed to be laying low, Rose found herself in a lot of dangerous situations. It sure did keep me turning the pages like a wild woman, though, since I absolutely had to find out what happened.

Every single book, Richelle continuously surprises me. You’d think that by 6 books in, there’d be nothing she could throw at me that would faze me. Nope, wrong! While I understand her writing style more and can predict when she’s throwing us something fake or getting ready for something big, I don’t understand the big plot twists until I’m right on them. And boy, did this book have plot twists! Rose even candidly mentions that her life was turning into a soap opera – it was funny, because I was thinking the exact same thing as I was reading. One thing is for sure: Richelle knows how to drop bombshells on me.

While I’m a bit bittersweet that the series ended, I also didn’t like the ending. I had pretty much guessed what the “last sacrifice” was before I even bought the book (there were only so many options), so I wasn’t too shocked when it rolled around. In fact, even though there was a happy ending, there were so many loose ends and so many hurt feelings that I couldn’t feel happy about the ending Rose got. I’m sure those loose ends were left so they could be tied up in the next VA spin-off books, but I would have liked a more conclusive ending in Rose’s perspective.

Regardless of how I disliked the ending, overall, the book was amazing. And then some.

Oh my gosh, I'm so happy with this book! With the end of Spirit Bound, I was so worried about Rose being in prison, because I felt like there were SO many loose ends that needed to be tied off, and Rose being in prison was a huge NO! But I realized that the whole series was organized differently than any of the other books I've read, and it was interesting the way she did it... but I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it. I feel like topics that were brought up in earlier books that seemed like they were going to be SO SIGNIFICANT turned out to be a lot more minor, and there were still a couple of loose ends, but it was a unique way to write the series, and I commend Richelle for that. I would have liked more resolution on Adrian and Jill and Sydney and Sonya and others (because HOW CAN YOU LEAVE ADRIAN SO HEARTBROKEN?!) but I guess that's what we have Bloodlines for... and I'm so excited to read them now! I'm so glad that there's another series, because Richelle writes her characters beautifully and I've fallen so much in love with every single one of them. I think this was my favorite one of all the books!
