a small part of why im giving this 4.5 stars is because the reviews on here initially made me feel like i might not like it — but i loved this book. i loved how it demanded my full, complete attention, each sentence was plump with meaning and intention. the flitting perspectives with their morally complex characters made for takes on classism, gender, and colonialism that are able to deliver on just how ambitious the novel sets out to be. do the questions it brings up remain unresolved by the end? yes. but i don’t think it’s upto literature to give us answers, really. there were parts that made me laugh, swoon, uncomfortable (not without reason, im glad), and broke my heart.

Did not enjoy. Few sensible characters and even fewer likeable ones, and all of them seemed somewhere between stereotypes and caricatures.
This book gave me an existential crisis. But it was worth it.

Great read, exceptional writing, explores and deals with several issues pertaining to post-colonial and modern India but ultimately falls short of providing a satisfactory resolution (that is not to say that it takes away from the merit of the work, but it does get in the way of catharsis).
