I feel like I really liked the first 30 pages, and then I was boooooooored for the rest of the book. Just didn't do it for me. But apparently other people liked it because it won some awards or some shit. If anyone wants to read it after this stellar review, you can totally have my copy.

For most of the middle part of this book I thought I was going to give it 3 stars, but then it all came together in the end. The writing was quirky and beautifully structured, and the feelings and thoughts of the big I tire versus the personal experience were very well articulated. It just got a bit slow in the middle at times.
What I took away mostly is that my life has virtually no hardship, and that I live a pretty comfortable life, but the inequality of that can blow up in my face at any time, so I must remind myself to share what I have for the sake of peace, civility and social justice.

I think the format made this harder for me to enjoy - the story is sprawling, goes back & forth in time, and also covers a lot of characters. It was hard to follow on audio. I thought the insurgency, and how it affected the lives of the main characters, was very important for the point of the novel but unfortunately didn’t become a significant part of the book until the latter half. It felt like too much time was spent on background info.
One of the best books I've read in a very long time. The plot sneaks up on you: the scene is being set, the characters introduced, and you keep waiting for the novel to really begin, only to find you've been completely wrapped up in the narrative all along. It's a small and simple story that nevertheless plays out on 2 continents and beautifully takes on the desperate reality for millions of poor, disenfranchised, brave, and hopeful people. I could go on and on about this book since it's amazingly deep and enchanting, but it's probably just better to say: read it. It's really, really good.
