I read a comment somewhere, that the biggest draw of the series is the banter between Joe and Skippy. I also read that the biggest letdown of the series is the banter between Joe and Skippy. And both comments are true. There are some scenes where the rivalry and ribbing between the two central protagonists carries the reader through page after page where nothing much happens. Only, then, something happens, and we're treated to Joe and Skippy arguing and fighting and revealing a little too much of how much of a schmuck they can each be. And that gets boring real fast.

All of that is to say that, as much as I enjoy the series, this book, volume seven took a minute to get through because it felt like too much of the same without enough forward progress to the over-arching story. However, the final chapters kick in with a bang and leave you (me, the readers) ready for the next book a.s.a.p.

🎧 - I feel like real life politics would have created this exact situation. Good bridge book for opening up bigger galactic problems

Well, my mind is blown.

The Merry Band of Pirates has faced impossible odds before. Truly. However, this book is a step up from that. In all possible ways.
First off, the mission isn't mereley impossible, it's so impossible everyone wants to give up. I am still amazed at how everything turned out.
Second, Skippy is more of an asshole than ever before. No, honestly, in that first mission (no spoilers, I promise) he was so much an asshole that I was starting to hate him. So far, I had only been amused by his behavior, I had to stop and consider that maybe Alanson had overplayed his hand. Thankfully, his assholishness returned to a normal setting, but I am still peeved about it.
And then, then there's the Elders mystery the books have been hinting at all this time. For the first time we start getting a few answers and it's mind blowing.
I don't know what's in store for the next half of the series, but I on board.

This is on par with the rest of the series. It has the biggest challenge and most complex solution yet, but I was not greatly moved. For the first time, we get a look at what an A.I. of skippy's caliber can do when he goes all-out... it was fun but, at the same time, highlighted how much he is NOT doing.
